Biography
Born in Felixstowe, Suffolk, Matt started teaching himself to play the bass at 13 and performed his first gig when he was 14. He continued to play in local bands until he was 19 when he moved to Cambridge to study Music at Anglia Ruskin University. Here, he fully immersed himself in the Cambridge music scene whilst studying his degree. He also received lessons from world class bassists Tiago Coimbra (Hiromi, Maceo Parker, Dennis Rollins) and Tony Cimorosi (Randy Brecker, Jeremy Wall).
Some of his career highlights include numerous festival tour dates with Sweet Crisis and Lepage Dean such as Ramblin’ Man festival, Cheltenham Jazz festival, Nanjing Jazz festival and featuring alongside legendary Jazz saxophonist, Bill Evans, and guitarist, Mike Stern, on the album Only Two Things Are Infinite by Chanan Hanspal.
Matt now lives in North East London where he divides up his time between performing around the U.K., teaching and composing.

lessons
I pride myself in being a great listener who caters for each student’s needs individually, whether the lessons are for fun, grades or profession. I can set out termly plans to achieve goals but also enjoy the spontaneity of covering whatever the student wants to learn in each lesson. I advocate curiosity and self-discovery and I like to help students find out what sparks their interest and creativity.
I offer 1-1 and group lessons both in person and online which cover the following:
Electric Bass from beginner to advanced levels in playing techniques, fretboard navigation, time keeping, genre studies (Jazz, Funk, Rock, Blues, World) and reading bass notation and chord charts.
Piano from beginner to intermediate levels in Classical, Pop, T.V/ Film and video game repertoire, keyboard navigation and reading notation.
Music Theory from beginner to advanced levels in melody, harmony and rhythm analysis, notation and composition. I typically use the ABRSM books to teach but also provide practical exercises when needed.
I am also happy to assist with all major exam boards; ABRSM, Trinity, Rockschool etc.

Testimonials
"Inspirational teacher, accommodating with the genre covered, will transcribe your favourite music, so you can learn to play it. Very supportive, patient and understanding, easy to get along with, and at the same challenging. Taken on a challenge with me as I am a novice to playing an instrument. Never too late to learn with Matt”
“We just love Matt – he is so kind and patient. He has been really great at teaching my 13 year old son bass guitar. He is always punctual, organised and very personable. He is most encouraging and provides us with a wonderful service. I definitely recommend him!”
“Really enjoying learning new styles and skills and putting right all my bad habits from 40 years of playing bass without lessons. Its a very enjoyable experience, one I look forward to through the week.”
“I’ve been working with Matt as a bass teacher for a few months now and even seen him perform, I can say that he knows the subject very well and can relay the information about the subject in an effective manner. Matt has a vast knowledge of all music and will accommodate anyone’s taste in music or bands and help to relate that to the subject as a whole.”
“Matt has a perfect blend of solid knowledge of theory whilst being able to apply it to the bass and make music. He also has impeccable teaching skills to help students of any skill level reach their goals.”
“Matt combines an underlying rigour in his teaching both in skills and theory with a fun and supportive environment. This blend provides good motivation as well as an example with his own knowledge and experience.”
